JANO ROSEBIANI
Jano Rosebiani was born in 1961 in Zamara, Iraqi Kurdistan, and received political asylum in the United States in 1976 after he and his family participated in the 1974 Kurdish uprising. In the mid-1980s, Rosebiani acquired his filmmaking expertise at NOVA College in Northern Virginia. His debut in the movie "Dance of the Pendulum" (1995, USA) took place in Hollywood. In 2001, he directed the film Life, about the aftermath of the 1987 chemical attack in Halabja. It was the first Kurdish film filmed in free South Kurdistan (Iraq). The painting has received many awards. Rosbiani has been featured in the illustrated book Cineaste Uit De Schaduw (by renowned Dutch photographer Chris DeWitt) as one of 35 renowned world filmmakers.
ABOUT THE FILM
A young girl Vian is forcibly given in marriage to a wealthy elderly businessman, Haji Hemmo. But during the wedding night, she runs out of the bedroom and climbs a tree, refusing to sleep with him. Hajj becomes a laughing stock in the city. In response, he punishes Vian by beating and locking her in the bedroom. The more the townspeople mock him, the harder he hits her. Meanwhile, a young itinerant artist, Botan comes to the rescue of the girl.
